Description

Italian percussionist Umberto Vitiello presents Lébou, a deeply evocative album released on Multi Culti and mixed by Italian techno innovator Donato Dozzy. Drawing on Vitiello's experiences living on Yarakh Beach on the outskirts of Dakar, Senegal, the record captures memories of a world shaped by the rhythms of daily life, the movement of the Atlantic Ocean and the rich musical traditions of the local community.

Named after the Lébou people, whose fishing culture has shaped the coastline around Dakar for centuries, the album serves as both a tribute to a community that welcomed Vitiello as one of their own and a reflection on the environmental and cultural changes that have transformed the landscape. Once filled with fishermen launching their pirogues at dawn, griots, vendors and towering palm trees, the beach now stands as a reminder of what has been lost.

Blending intricate percussion, atmospheric textures and immersive sound design, Lébou moves between electronica, downtempo, Balearic and global musical influences. Vitiello revisits formative experiences dating back to the 1980s, weaving personal memories into a wider meditation on place, transformation and our relationship with nature. Vocal contributions from Olympia Ndiaye, Anna Caragnano and Mariangela Morais add further depth to this richly layered sonic journey.

Guided by Donato Dozzy's spacious, considered mix, the album unfolds with a hypnotic and cinematic quality, balancing organic rhythms with expansive electronic atmospheres. From reflective passages to more percussive, rhythm-driven moments, Lébou is a distinctive listening experience for fans of leftfield electronica, Balearic sounds and adventurous global music.
