Salt Queen make a striking debut on Samples From Mars with ARE U OK, a raw, acid-fuelled club record that sits somewhere between acid house, minimal techno and classic New York house. Combining deadpan spoken word, hardware-driven production and a mischievous sense of humour, this debut release introduces a unique new voice in underground dance music.

The project brings together visual artist and musician Magali van Caloen alongside Teddy Stuart, founder of Samples From Mars and one half of acclaimed disco-house outfit A/JUS/TED with Justin Strauss. Drawing on Stuart's extensive background as a Grammy-nominated recording engineer and producer, the duo embrace a stripped-back analogue approach centred around vintage drum machines, acid basslines and hypnotic groove.

The title track “ARE U OK” unfolds as a surreal late-night club encounter, pairing Italo-inspired TR-808 rhythms with a relentless TB-303 acid line and dry spoken-word vocals that move between concern, humour and chaos. Deliberately sparse, there are no lush chords or obvious melodies—just raw rhythm, tension and an intimate vocal performance that slowly spirals into siren-filled madness.

On the flip, the “Freak Nasty Club Mix” pushes things further into dancefloor territory. A thick, driving Roland SH-101 bassline anchors the opening section before giving way to an aggressive acid workout that builds intensity throughout. Instrumental versions of both mixes offer additional DJ tools, making this a versatile record for adventurous selectors.
