Description:
Bristol producer Napes returns to 1985 Music with his sophomore release for the label, 'Steppin On Toes EP'. Following his acclaimed debut on the imprint, the four-track EP sees Napes link up with Alix Perez, Visages and Scratchy for a heavyweight excursion through Drum & Bass, Jungle, Breaks and UK Bass, pressed on striking white 12 inch vinyl.
Known for tracks including 'Shooters Hill' and 'Wavelord Bizniz', Napes has developed a sound rooted in soundsystem pressure, intricate percussion and the space between Jungle, D&B and contemporary UK club music. 'Steppin On Toes' pushes that approach further, moving between tempos and moods while maintaining a consistently technical and rhythm-focused edge.
The title track, 'Steppin On Toes', finds Napes joining forces with French production collective Visages and UK MC Scratchy. Running at 160-plus BPM, the collaboration delivers a tightly engineered, high-pressure opener where heavyweight low end and technical drum programming meet Scratchy's unmistakable vocal presence.
'Nine Mil' switches the tempo down towards the 135 BPM region, moving into broken UK Bass territory while retaining the EP's tough, percussive character. The change of pace highlights Napes' versatility beyond straight Drum & Bass, bringing a different kind of club pressure to the A-side.
On the flip, Napes teams up with 1985 Music founder Alix Perez for 'Shimaki'. Returning to the higher tempos, the track introduces a more atmospheric and soulful dimension, pairing detailed production with an emotive vocal element while retaining the weight and precision expected from both producers.
Closing cut 'Ground Speed' puts Napes back in solo mode for a sharp, percussion-heavy finale. Snappy drums and concussive rhythmic details bring the record to a suitably forceful close, rounding out an EP that moves fluidly between Jungle, Drum & Bass, Breaks and bass-heavy UK club sounds.
Perfect for DJs and collectors into Drum & Bass vinyl, Jungle, UK Bass, Breaks and forward-thinking soundsystem music. With collaborations from Alix Perez, Visages and Scratchy alongside two solo Napes productions, Steppin On Toes EP is a versatile four-tracker from one of Bristol's rising bass producers, presented on white 12 inch vinyl.
