Description:
PANORAMA Records heads to South Africa for its next archival release, pairing two rare 1979 recordings from Mpharanyana on one essential 7 inch vinyl. Featuring Mpharanyana And The Cannibals – 'Get Down' on the A-side and Mpharanyana And The Peddlers – 'Disco' on the flip, the release captures a joyous meeting point between South African Disco, Funk, Soul and Afro-disco.
Born Jacob Radebe, Mpharanyana became one of the defining voices of South African Soul, Disco and Funk during the 1970s. Recording with groups including The Cannibals and The Peddlers, and working alongside future legends such as Ray Phiri, he developed a distinctive sound that brought together Soul, Funk, Disco and mbaqanga influences.
The A-side, Mpharanyana And The Cannibals – 'Get Down', delivers an irresistible blend of modern Soul, Boogie and South African Disco-Funk. Rhodes-heavy instrumentation, tight musicianship and a celebratory groove give the track an immediate warmth, resulting in a joyous dancefloor cut that feels built for sunny sessions and feel-good selections.
On the flip, Mpharanyana And The Peddlers – 'Disco' pushes into a tougher Afro-funk and Afro-disco direction. Funky, energetic and made for peak-time play, it combines infectious hooks with driving rhythms and the raw musicality that made Mpharanyana's recordings so distinctive.
Both tracks were originally recorded in 1979, with each side showcasing Mpharanyana alongside a different backing band. Despite his cult reputation among collectors, 'Get Down' has never previously received an official reissue, making its return to vinyl particularly welcome. Paired with the equally sought-after 'Disco', the release brings two rare pieces of South African dance music history together on one record.
The release continues PANORAMA Records' mission of uncovering rare and essential music from around the world and returning overlooked records to circulation. More than collector curiosities, these are deeply musical, highly playable tracks that demonstrate why Mpharanyana's work deserves recognition far beyond specialist digging circles.
Perfect for DJs and collectors into South African Disco vinyl, Afro-funk, Soul, Boogie, Afro-disco and rare African grooves. With two sought-after 1979 dancefloor cuts on one 7 inch vinyl, Get Down / Disco is an essential introduction to the music of Mpharanyana and a serious record for the bag.
