Description:
Mondo Love & Betrayal, the duo of Neil 'Nail' Tolliday and Henry Claude Scott, present their self-titled debut album on NuNorthern Soul. A colourful and emotionally rich collection of 80s-inspired Synth-Pop, Balearic, Downtempo and Electronica, the ten-track LP combines vintage electronic textures, expressive songwriting and Scott's distinctive falsetto vocals with influences drawn from late-80s dance-pop and New York club culture.
The project brings together two musicians with contrasting but complementary backgrounds. Tolliday, widely known as Nail, has long been a respected figure within the UK electronic underground, with a catalogue spanning dancefloor-focused Deep House, experimental Electronica and numerous aliases including A.M Vibe, Lucky Lime and Smoke. He was also one half of acclaimed Nottingham downtempo duo Bent alongside longtime collaborator Simon Mills.
Henry Claude Scott, meanwhile, comes from a background in guitar, Jazz and atmospheric songwriting. His work with Torn Sail, alongside Huw Costin, explored Folk-infused Downtempo and Balearic music for labels including Claremont 56 and NuNorthern Soul, while his Brown Fang project with John 'Ming' Thompson blurred the boundaries between Ambient, Balearica, Krautrock, minimalism and instrumental soundscapes.
The partnership began with 'Correspondence', the first track Tolliday and Scott recorded together and the song that ultimately inspired the wider Mondo Love & Betrayal project. The session revealed a natural meeting point between Tolliday's love of Synth-Pop and electronic production and Scott's songwriting and emotive falsetto. What began as a single collaboration soon developed into an album recorded over the following 18 months.
Across tracks including 'Boo Boo', 'Your Latest', 'Brought Me Back Home' and 'Beyond The Rainy City', the duo create a kaleidoscopic take on mid-to-late-80s Synth-Pop. Bright synthesizers and tactile electronic production sit alongside Indie songwriting, playful lyrics and themes of heartache, doubt, love and betrayal, giving the album a nostalgic character without simply recreating the past.
There are audible echoes of artists and producers such as Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Martin Rushent and Stephen Hague, while touches of New York club culture and the UK's Second Summer of Love broaden the album's musical palette. The result feels like a lost late-80s Synth-Pop record viewed through the experience of two musicians deeply rooted in Balearic, Downtempo and underground electronic music.
Already receiving early support from Macca, Chris Hawkins, Bill Brewster and Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, the album offers a distinctive meeting point between accessible Pop songwriting and the deeper, more exploratory sounds associated with NuNorthern Soul.
Perfect for listeners and collectors into Synth-Pop vinyl, Balearic music, Downtempo, Indie Electronica and 1980s-inspired electronic Pop. With ten tracks of warm synths, memorable songwriting and expressive vocals, Mondo Love & Betrayal is a beautifully crafted debut 12 inch vinyl LP that bridges nostalgic Pop and contemporary leftfield Electronica.
