Description:
Tokyo Love Song (a spin-off imprint of XL Middleton’s MoFunk label) presents a special 7” pairing of cult Japanese electro-funk history with modern funk reinterpretation. Minoru “Hoodoo” Fushimi, a revered figure in Japan’s underground 80s scene, appears with the sought-after cut “In Praise Of Mitochondria”, brought to 7 inch vinyl for the very first time.
Known for his distinctive blend of lo-fi electro funk, drum machine-driven grooves and early hip hop influences, Fushimi sits alongside the broader city pop era while remaining firmly outside of it. His work has become highly collectible among fans of rare Japanese funk and experimental synth music.
On the B-side, XL Middleton joins forces with Japan’s modern funk outfit Milk Talk for “Funkin Me Up”, a reimagined version of the A-side track. Blending squiggly analogue funk textures with playful vocals from Q.i and live instrumentation from Hairkid, the result is a vibrant, leftfield modern funk reinterpretation that bridges eras and continents.
Supported by tastemakers including Soul Clap, Walla P (Voyage Funktastique) and DJ Notoya, this release connects cult Japanese funk heritage with contemporary global funk movements, making it an essential addition for collectors of modern funk vinyl and rare groove enthusiasts.
