Description:
Explore the rich and vibrant sounds of Jasper Van’t Hof’s Pili Pili with this comprehensive "Selected Works 1984 to 2002" vinyl compilation, released by NuNorthern Soul. Building on their previous retrospectives of Ryo Kawasaki and Joan Bibiloni, NuNorthern Soul now highlights the groundbreaking catalog of Van’t Hof’s pioneering electro-acoustic, Afro-fusion collective, Pili Pili.
Founded in 1984 by Dutch jazz pianist Jasper Van’t Hof, a versatile artist with roots in Europe’s jazz scene of the late 1960s, Pili Pili was Van’t Hof’s innovative project blending jazz-fusion with North-West African music. Known for pushing musical boundaries, Van’t Hof has previously played with Jean-Luc Ponty, led jazz-rock band Jasper Van’t Hof’s Porkpie, recorded the electronic album Visitors (1982), and collaborated with jazz legend Archie Shepp on Mama Rose.
Pili Pili marked a new chapter, featuring collaborations with percussionists and vocalists from Benin and Mali, including the legendary Angelique Kidjo, as well as jazz improvisers like Tony Lakato and Annie Whitehead. Their music seamlessly combines live and programmed percussion, electronic and acoustic instruments, and memorable melodies, resulting in a truly cross-cultural fusion.
This retrospective focuses on Pili Pili’s most acclaimed period, showcasing six essential tracks originally released between 1984 and 2002. These recordings offer a captivating glimpse into the band’s innovative sound and musical evolution, making it a must-have for jazz, world, and fusion enthusiasts.
As with previous NuNorthern Soul releases, the vinyl version of Selected Works 1984-2002 includes extensive liner notes, featuring quotes, reflections, and stories from Jasper Van’t Hof, written by respected music historian Matt Anniss.
